Community Transport Drivers – Casual & Volunteer
St John Ambulance is a world-class health services organization that provides –
- First Aid expertise, products and training,
- Event Services (first aiders, basic life support, advanced life support, etc),
- Community Service (including transport) programs, and
- Charitable services to the community.
About the Role
This is a great time to be joining St John Ambulance Queensland as we continue to build a ‘best in class’ Community Transport function. These drivers (support workers) provide a responsive, customer focused service by driving fleet vehicles to provide a direct transport service to meet the specific needs of St John Ambulance Social Services consumers. Roles exist for both Volunteer and Casual Drivers in both Townsville and Brisbane.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Provide a high standard of customer service
- Provide safe transportation of clients, including securing wheelchairs / scooters and checking seat belts are secure
- Obey all relevant road and driving laws and safety regulations
- Complete and return documentation (vehicle reports, transport schedules and driver’s envelopes)
- Ensure clients are escorted to their destination and provided safe entry to their home or place of residence
- Maintain awareness and apply knowledge of the safe operation of mobility aids and vehicle hoists
- Report immediately any accident, emergency or serious mechanical / equipment fault
- Daily vehicle maintenance, cleaning and refuelling
- Ensure vehicles are secured at all times when not in use
- Undertake office duties and promotional activities as required
- Attend orientation, regular training sessions, workshops and team meetings
- Provide feedback, suggestions and recommendations regarding the program
- Adhere to St John and external stakeholder policies and procedures where applicable
- Act and communicate in a respectful and professional manner at all times when representing St John
- Undertake other duties as required/directed as service needs change or grow (consistent with the above and within scope of the position)
About you
- A safe driver who is committed to providing a quality personal service
- Solid communication skills – capacity to liaise professionally with a varying client base including clients with disability and aged persons related conditions
- Intermediate IT skills, literacy and numeracy and money handling experience
- Ability to acquire extensive knowledge of the St John products and services range
- Demonstrated effective interpersonal and written communication skills; and ability to quickly establish rapport
- Ability to maintain confidentiality on all issues in relation to St John, consumers and members
- The ability to work independently and as a team member
- Proven ability to manage schedules and tasks

Licenses and Registrations
- A current open Queensland driver license (MR advantageous), plus safe driving skills and record
- A current Queensland Transport Driver Authorization (DA) (or ability to obtain one)
- Current Provide First Aid and CPR certificate (or ability to obtain one)
- Current National Police Check (or ability to obtain one)
- Current Blue Card (or ability to obtain one)
Conditions of Employment
- Casual Drivers receive a competitive hourly rate plus employer superannuation as per ATO/SGC legislation
- Volunteer Drivers are fully supported with on boarding, training and recognition
- Some positions are reliant on recurrent funding from DSS and QCCS and will be reviewed if that funding is reviewed
- Working hours are normally within Monday to Friday but we need flexibility to work outside normal hours when required
- St John members must have a zero blood alcohol concentration and must not smoke or take illicit drugs during operating hours
- St John members should not take medication that may affect their duties during operating hours
