Offshore Paramedic Jobs – a career guide
Offshore Paramedic Jobs Explained
Working as a Paramedic or medic means you have a choice of different career pathways. Choosing to work in remote locations such as on oil and gas rigs in the ocean and on land in the harsh deserts of the Western Australian Pilbara – the role of the Paramedic can be challenging and also so very rewarding.
A sample of the tasks of the offshore Paramedic;
- Provide first aid and primary healthcare to detainees;
- Diagnosis and treatment of non-emergency medical conditions as per IHMS treatment protocols;
- Provision of primary care services to the workforce within, where this does not adversely affect the Paramedic’s ability to provide medical emergency coverage;
- Management and administration including initial audit of equipment and medicines.
- Providing emergency response and patient transfers in Remote and Offshore locations may be required
- Reporting to the OHS Manager
- Family friendly roster pattern
These types of jobs are also referred to as remote paramedic, or industrial Emergency Services Officer; more so in the mining and resource sector. Typically, worker who fulfill this role have gained paramedical/pre-hospital emergency health care qualifications such as the HLT51015 – Diploma of Paramedical Science. This entry-level paramedical qualification has gained popularity as the preferred pathway into the emergency services sector.
The diploma is popular because on average it takes 18-24 months to complete; even less if you have the time to knuckle down and really get the work done. Not being tied to a strict curriculum, students can choose when and where they study because of the blended-learning style. The majority of the course can be completed online, with only 2 clinical workshops and 2 x 80 hour blocks of clinical placement (supervised work experience) required.
Since Paramedic registration was introduced, more and more employers are looking for this level of compliance when seeking new workers. One way to achieve registration is to complete the diploma, then use it to get into university to complete a Bachelor of Paramedic Science degree. In most cases, if you choose to study a diploma first, you can be credited for the subjects already completed, saving time and money.
As you’ll see in this offshore paramedic job, the advertiser asks for diploma-qualified applicants, or degree-qualified with Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) registration.
