As a paramedic you will deal with people at some of the most critical moments in their life with the knowledge and training to make a difference, to do something that truly matters, to save a life.
If you’re currently a AIN (assistant in nursing), EN (enrolled nurse) or RN (registered nurse), you already possess a variety of knowledge in the health care industry which provides you with a head start in becoming an adventurous state ambulance officer!
You are also surrounded by paramedics and doctors so you never have a shortage of wisdom and experience to aid you in your study. You are expanding on an already established knowledge base. Practical knowledge is one thing but to have hands-on experience in the field provides the kind of confidence that will be invaluable in the pursuit of your new career.
Do I need further study?

If further study interests you, you can move into the Diploma of Paramedic Science. The diploma is an intermediate level course and will provide you with the skills necessary to step into higher level paramedic roles, such as:

- Emergency medical technician
- Private patient transport officer
- Ambulance attendant

Do I need a bachelor of paramedical science?

Once you have completed the Diploma, the natural progression is the Bachelor of Paramedical Science. It is an advanced level course and will provide you with the necessary skills to manage life-threatening situations as well as expertly diagnose and treat a patient. If you possess the following Bachelor, you will be able to step into high level paramedic roles, such as:
- Paramedic
- Emergency services officer (ESO)
- Industrial medic
- Advanced life support
- Ambulance paramedic
- Ambulance transport attendant
- Emergency medical technician
- Private patient transport officer
- Ambulance attendant
- Emergency patient transport officer
- Emergency medical technician

How is the paramedic job market?

Jobs in the health care field continue to grow, and as baby boomers age and move into retirement, it’s not all golf and trips to The Bahamas. The truth is that living longer also provides more time to become ill, which means that for both nurses and paramedics, employment in the health care field will remain strong with a high degree of growth to come.
According to the Australian Governments Employment Projections the health care and social assistance industry is projected to make an astounding contribution to employment growth over the next five years, with an estimated increase of 250,000. This will make it the fastest growing job market in Australia – standing at an 18.7% growth rate.
Health care and paramedic jobs in Australia in particular have risen by a rate of 81.6% over the past half decade and are expected to have a further 2.1% growth over the next five years. The department of Education are also foreseeing an 8.3% overall employment growth for people with a Certificate IV and a 10.4% growth for people with Diplomas of Paramedic Science.
On top of these great figures, 90.9% of Paramedics being employed on a full time basis ensuring long-term job security!
