This newly developed HLT51020 – Diploma of Emergency Health Care qualification (formerly known as the HLT51015 – Diploma of Paramedical Science), reflects the training package for workers to provide patient assessment, healthcare and transport services in an out-of-hospital setting. The diploma has recently been updated and improved to cater for the changing needs of the industry.

Graduates of this training course will be referred to in their job title, as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), Advanced Life Support Medic, Paramedic Assistant.
They will possess high-level clinical skills and theoretical knowledge and provide clinical assessment and out-of-hospital environments to patients in an emergency; including providing advanced skills in life support.
This qualification applies to a variety of roles within the emergency health care and patient transport system.
To successfully achieve this Emergency Health Care qualification, there is a requirement to complete at minimum 160 hours of clinical workplace experience as well as attend 2 clinical workshops.

The HLT51020 – Diploma of Emergency Health Care training package delivers the skills required to effectively manage life-threatening patient situations and paramedical equipment. As a student, you will learn the fundamentals and advanced knowledge of clinical practice to understand the importance of drugs and how to administer them correctly; as well as be confident to use and implement effective clinical procedures to save a life.
The HLT51020 – Diploma of Emergency Health Care is Nationally Recognised, meaning, no matter where you live in Australia, you ca be confident this qualification is going to be well worth the investment.
The course is a blended model program which allows students to continue to work and study during their free time.
Graduates of the HLT51020 – Diploma of Emergency Health Care can use their qualification to gain work in a variety of areas in the private sector. Past students who have studied with Australian Paramedical College have used our courses to take them overseas to work or pathway to university to become a registered paramedic.
There are 17 units of competency in this qualification.
The theory component of the course is completed online. Clinical Intensive Workshops are held at training campuses on the Gold Coast (Burleigh), New South Wales, Victoria and Western Australia (Perth). 160 hours of clinical placement is also a requirement to achieve competency.
Maximum allowed completion time 24 months. Students are able to complete this in less time (if desired). Average course duration is 18-24 months.

Scenario

Let’s imagine you’re a qualified emergency responder (medic/paramedic) and you’ve just received a call to attend an emergency request for assistance.
We’ve mapped each of the study topics to the different stages of the call-out. Study units begin with HLT and each of the topic are made up of tasks and activities. Each task describes what you’ll be expected to do to achieve competency in the unit. This will hopefully reveal to you just how relevant this training is; and why you can feel confident choosing the diploma as the entry pathway into practicing emergency medicine.

Clinical skills development.

An important and essential part of your training focuses on clinical skills development. This is the hands-on part of your learning; where your fast reactions and clinical reasoning makes the difference to patient outcomes.
Clinical skills learned in the HLT51020 – Diploma of Emergency Health Care are found in the following Units of Competency (UoC’s).

  • Check the physical health status of the patient.
  • Obtain information about physical health status.
  • Implement out-of-hospital patient care procedures.

  • Handover your patient to a healthcare professional, facility or service.

  • Be competent in your language, literacy and numeracy abilities.

  • Be confident using a computer and the internet to research.
  • Be an Australian resident/citizen or approved temporary visa.
  • Supply a medical consent document if you have a pre-disposed medical condition.
